Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay, 2016

This used to be a Western Scrub-Jay. But the species was just split into two: the California Scrub-Jay and the Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay. Read more at eBird

American Dipper

I fondly remember the Dipper from my time in the Trinity Alps of California, especially one rainy day as I sat watching one struggle for the longest time trying to swallow a small fish seemingly half the size of the bird. Finally, success! Later, in honor of his fortitude and perseverance I named my gold claim after him the Dipper.

Goodbye, Yellow-rump?

Affectionately known to bird watchers as butterbutts, Yellow-rumped Warblers are at the center of another discussion over what defines a species. In 1973, the Myrtle and Audubon's warbler species were lumped into one to create the yellow-rumped. But ornithologists may have had it right the first time. Read about what the DNA evidence suggests,

Phainopepla nitens

Phainopepla" comes from the Greek for shining robe; Phainopeplas are the only US Silky-flycatchers, Ptilogonatidae; they feed on mistletoe in winter, other berries (and insects) in spring through fall; found in desert washes with abundant mistletoe, orchards, chaparral, Joshua tree woodlands, oak and sycamore woodlands.

Hepatic Tanager 1st sighting, 6/1/2016

This bird was across the river, working the young Narrow Leaf Cottonwoods, then flew to a mature tree just past where I was sitting on a bench contemplating the day with my camera hanging around my neck. This happened on the River Walk opposite the High School.

1st year Summer Tanager?, Apr 2011

This bird is tricky because it's sort of intermediate between 2 sexes, it appears to be a 1st year Summer Tanager (SUTA). The red plumage is just starting to come in, but it's retaining a lot of the golden yellow color that immatures and females have. The bill shape is very distinctive of the Piranga tanagers (Western, Hepatic, Summer), broad bill, tipped. The bill color is grayish, but will turn yellow as the bird ages. The other possibility is a young Hepatic Tanager, but I think of their bill as being slightly drooping with the top culmen (portion of the bill) being slightly de-curved. Nice birds, I haven't had a SUTA yet this season, but listen in for their distinctive very hard, 'Piic-tick' call.
